United States Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot, confirmed that Guyanese authorities have exercised their right to reject specific individuals from a U.S. deportation manifest. According to the diplomat, the government in Georgetown utilizes its own intelligence and CARICOM criminal databases to screen potential arrivals, explicitly refusing those with criminal records. While the U.S. intended to facilitate monthly flights for non-Guyanese deportees, the final number of arrivals depends entirely on local approval. To support this two-year agreement, the United States has allocated US$7.8 million to the International Organisation for Migration. These funds are designated for temporary housing, medical care, food, and vocational training for those accepted. Currently, the program has seen the arrival of six individuals, specifically from Cuba and Afghanistan, while others were denied entry to ensure national security.
